I am originally from the easy to draw, difficult to spell province of Saskatchewan. After college I went to Yellowknife to live and work in a 5-star Eco lodge in Canada's beautiful Canadian Shield. After that job, I spent a couple months travelling Canada and settled in Quebec after falling in love with a Québécois. Like most people who come to Quebec for love, we don't realize how essential it is to learn French until we start looking for work. Even the most entry level positions require French, and I soon became discouraged and depressed.
Without knowing what I could do, I walked into a local Emploi-Québec office and told them I wanted to learn French. They happily met with me and told me to go find a couple schools that offer Francisation (French classes to non French speakers). I found 2 options at that moment: 1st option: A public school with 20-30 students, where I would attain level Intermediate after 2 years. 2nd option: A private school with 16 students, where I would attain level Advanced in 6 months. I, of course, chose option #2, only to finally discover that after 6 months, I was still at a beginner level. Now move forward ten years later, I am the owner of a language school specializing in English and French classes for busy business professionals. From my own experience and time and energy wasted, I have created a more effective and efficient program to learn French, so participants feel comfortable and confident to get back out in the Québec workforce.
